How do you manage a “no show” at work?

Posted on: March 16, 2018 | Categories: Complaince StaffRosters Blog

I loved this article and had to share…..

What does “no call no show” mean?

“No call no show” is a common phrase used to describe a scenario when someone doesn’t show up for work and doesn’t call. This can put a heavy strain on your business and can lead to mistrust and even to firing that employee. In at-will employment states, you are, generally, within your rights to fire an employee for any reason at any time.

No call no show excuses

Are there really any good excuses for missing work and not calling? According to CareerBuilder’s annual survey of employees and human resources managers, 40% of workers have called in sick in 2017 when they actually weren’t. The top reason for calling in sick while not actually ill is to go to a doctor’s appointment, followed by simply not feeling like going to work. The same survey also found that about one-quarter of employers have said they’ve fired someone for concocting a fake excuse.

The survey was based on responses from 2,257 hiring and HR managers and 3,697 full-time employees. Below are some of the craziest excuses employers reported:

  • A bear was in employee’s yard and they were afraid to come out.
  • Employee’s phone exploded and it hurt their hand.
  • Employee ate a toothpick in his food at a restaurant.
  • Employee broke his arm wrestling a female bodybuilder.
  • Employee called in “fat” because uniform didn’t fit.
  • Dog swallowed employee’s car keys so she was waiting until it came out.
  • Employee left his clothes at the laundry mat.
  • Employee did not have enough gas to get to work.
  • Employee had to reschedule a new manicure because some of their artificial nails fell off.
  • Employee was not sure how the solar eclipse would affect them so it would be safer to stay at home.

Time & People announced Deputy partner of the year 2017

I was shocked to receive the partner of the year award for Deputy on the eve of Xerocon 2017. At an event held for Deputy partners in Melbourne the night before Xerocon Deputy introduced Servicem8 as a new integration partner and also announced emerging partner of the year along with partner of the year.

I was extremely proud to see Time & People rewarded for many years of work with Deputy winning Partner of the year 2017. The award was presented by Kristin Harris with around 150 partners in the room including Apple. I was asked what I thought about winning the award and commented…“I was so pleased to receive Deputy Partner of the year 2017 for Time & People. Deputy has made it very easy to satisfy our customers over the past 5 years, as it is such an awesome product. Every month another feature comes out taking Deputy to the next level, making it even easier for customers to select Deputy over the competition. Workplace compliance – How do you manage your scheduled employees compliance?

Deputy has had for a long time the ability to record skills/qualifications against an individual however Deputy lacked any real compliance by having no checks and balances against the qualification entered into the system.

We now have a game changer…..Deputy now includes the ability to not only register the skill/qualification you can now enter details around the qualification including expiry dates so you can be notified.

So, what’s new exactly?

  • Manage Expiry – Set expiry dates so you manage training that requires renewal. Also, if training expires, Deputy will automatically warn you
  • Upload a File – Keep full documentation/photo/certificate of all your training. So if you are ever audited, it’s there in a few clicks!
  • Enter a Comment – Leave a quick note to provide additional information about your training requirements

A valid drivers license

To help with the new elements in training, we’ve also introduced new icons to keep you aware
Here’s what each of them mean:

The ‘ticked’ icon means that the training requirement is still valid, and has not yet expired.

The ‘paper clip’ icon indicates that there’s a file uploaded for this training requirement.

The ‘speech bubble’ icon means that there’s comment attached to this training requirement.

The ‘warning’ icon means that the current training module has already expired.

How does it work?

Start by editing your employee’s profile and scrolling to the Job Information section. Then, add a training requirement and click on the ‘Edit’ icon to add further details.
